This morning we left Bretagne for Senonches. Mon Sejour en Bretagne est finis! It was a 7 hour drive back and we only made one stop,
in Fougeres. It is a beautiful town on the edge of Bretagne.![]() N 48 20.965 W 1 12.193 |

Its most striking feature is the castle, Chateau de Fougeres, the largest in Europe from its epoch. Dating back to the middle ages, it is about 800 years old and undergoing restoration.

What's a castle without a mote? |

![]() I cannot help but admire the engineering. The water, of course, is level. But look at the joints between the rows of stone blocks near the water. |
![]() They are parallel to the water. So of course the rows of stone are level as well. Therefore the entire castle is level. Plumb, level, and square, as they say. |

Built with a long seige in mind, it has its own water supply. This come from a nearby river which was partially diverted to go through the castle, and also partially diverted to form the mote. Conveniently it supplied power to run the mills to grind the grain into flour for bread. |
